3 out of 5 stars A very personal project for the artist   July 23, 2007
This CD was a very personal project for the artist in her attempts to reach her neice who apparently has some challenges. It is very interesting, but doesn't keep my attention the way some of her others do. I still prize owning it, as I will anything she records.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable   May 24, 2007
Regina Carter is one of the best-kept secrets in jazz, and this CD does nothing to dispel that. It starts out with a nice up-tempo tune in "Downtown Underground", a song with a nice feel and a good beat. Later, the title track and "Late Night Mood" are enjoyable listens.

As much as she shines on this, her supporting cast is excellent throughout as well and you can really hear them on most tunes. Regina is excellent, and with the supporting cast that's on this CD, it adds up to a great CD to have.

5 out of 5 stars breath taking   June 2, 2005
The is Regina's second CD and so excellent. It really hits on every sensibilities, wether the melancholic "Reflections," or the downright swinging "Downtown Underground." This CD carries you to so many myraid of emotions. One thing that everyone notices about most of the tracks here is the length, most are 5 to 6 minutes long, which brings one to conclusion that this CD was written for the pure sake of the music it's self, not tailored made to be played on easy listening jazz or the like. The title track is beautiful, mostly Regina's violin with a little synthesizer for emphasis. And track #7 "Late Night Mood" is aptly titled but I think it's good for any time of the day just to help you get into the Zone. The inside jacket (very sparse) doesn't list the vocals but the line up of musicians list a Nikki Richards as providing vocals-- very pretty voice, Nikki. And how do you finish off a wonderful CD like this, ofcourse with an upbeat latin tinge number , "Centro Habana." It's like finishing a delicious meal with a scrumptous piece of tres leches. Bravo RC.

5 out of 5 stars "LISTEN HERE..."   December 3, 2000

to me, this is Regina Carter's most melodic and accessible CD. A CD that can "get down and funky," one minute, then "beautiful and soulful" the next and still have the flow sound so good, you just shake your head. Regina kicks it off in high gear with "Downtown Underground." She keeps it funky with her interpretation of the Eddie Harris classic "Listen Here." She makes the violin sing on her interpretation of "I'll Write a Song For You." "Soul Eyes" is just stripped down, beautiful violin that is soul stirring. And "Late Night Mood" should be recommended playing on any smooth jazz/quiet storm Saturday night programming. But the best thing to do is don't rely on the radio, BUY THIS CD!

This was my introduction to Regina's music. I love jazz violin and once I heard this CD, I was in love with her playing and style. I bought "Rhythms of the Heart" and while that is a beautiful CD, it had to grow on me. This one GRABBED me! Every cut is outstanding. A worthy addition to any jazz collection.

The latest offering from Regina Carter blew me away. I especially enjoyed the first track, "Dreamin' on the Nile River," as well as her remake of an Earth, Wind and Fire cut "I'll Write a Song For You." Ms. Carter even throws in a little Chaka Khan for fun and has great results. I recommend this title to anyone who enjoys the violin outside of "classical music" settings, the jazz violin curious, and the afficionado.
