SURF'S UP February 2, 2008 I DON'T MUCH GO IN FOR A LOT OF MODERN DAY SURF MUSIC BANDS, BUT THIS CD COMPILATION REALLY ROCKS. LOS STRAIGHTJACKETS IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE MODERN DAY SURF MUSIC BAND, AND THEY ARE WELL REPRESENTED ON THIS CD, AS WELL AS LAIKA AND THE COSMONAUTS, ANOTHER GREAT BAND (THE HALIBUTS, TOO!). LOTS OF GREAT REVERB SOUNDS. GREAT BUDGET CD OF GOOD SURF MUSIC, GREAT TO LISTEN TO WHILE CRUSING IN YOUR CAR. THE THEME FROM MISSION IMPOSSIBLE IS COOL.
Let the music do the talking July 4, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you like fast, furious, (and sometimes funny) surf guitar, check out (1) Itchy Chicken, (2) Pier Pressure, and (3) Tailspin. My daughter likes (4) Mission Impossible. Actually, they're all good tracks -- those are just the ones that stand out (for me).
Surf's up... way up! February 3, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'm not much for anthologies, but this is probably the best (and cheapest!) little surf anthology on the market. With three tunes by both Los Straitjackets and Laika and the Cosmonauts along with a couple from each of The Halibuts and Teisco Del Ray, the listener is in really good hands. Everything that you think surf music should be is represented... a few Latin rhythms in Teisco Del Ray's "Seville" and the Tailgators' "Tico Tico", a bit of the Middle Eastern/Russian thing in The Halibuts' "Suicide Bay" and some hard-charging, tribal beat in Los Straitjackets' Tailspin" and Laika and the Cosmonauts' "Miserlou". The cover does look a bit cheap, but the liner notes are actually useful with brief descriptions of each bands involved. Like surf? You can't afford not to have this one.
surf instrumental April 11, 2004 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
This seems more like a guitar instrumental alblum to me and less of a surf guitar alblum. None of the songs stand out at all even though they are all nicely arranged. There is quite a bit of difference between authentic 60's surf music and the nice sounding guitar music this CD presents. All in all the CD is worth buying. The 33 minutes of music are fun to listen to and there are no clunkers on the alblum.
Surf Rock you alive and rockin' October 17, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
With this CD you get a little sampler of a few artisits, tackling covers with some nice originals, very cool, and very chill music, the kind that ends up in sountracks... yeah there's no dick dale, but if you like his stuff, you probrably already have a few of his CDs already, besides where else can one hear 2 Los Straightjackets songs plus a bunch of other amazing bands...ONE great plus, even on first liten none of the songs sound the same... great job of arranging covers especially "Tico Tico." Ends w/Los Straitjackets "Pacifica" yup Drivin' music at its finest, definatly makes the long drives -into- short drives.
