1964 brought both triumph and ironic tragedy to English spy-turned-author Ian Fleming. The year that saw producer Cubby Broccoli's successful film adaptation of Goldfinger elevate the adventures of British secret agent James Bond into a four-decade-plus global phenomena and the publication of Fleming's most idiosyncratic work, the children's fantasy Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, was also the year the author succumbed to a heart attack. Broccoli (who'd acquired the Chitty rights along with Bond) shrewdly lured the Sherman Brothers away from Disney (where their musical successes included a pair of Oscars for Mary Poppins) to write a collection of songs for Fleming's magical tale of inventor Caractacus Potts (Poppins' star Dick Van Dyke) and the phantasmagorical flying car he and his children soar to adventure in. The Sherman's songs are among their best and most beloved, highlighted by the jaunty rhythmic rhymes of the title track, Van Dyke's energetic cane dance, "Me Ol' Bam-Boo," and his bittersweet children's lullaby, "Hushabye Mountain," all set to the magnificent, 90-piece orchestra arrangements of Irwin Kostal (Mary Poppins, West Side Story). Released in conjunction with MGM's double-disc DVD anniversary release, this new edition restores the album's tracks to their original 1968 format and features a new historical essay on the film that's become an enduring children's classic. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for kids or adults!   June 18, 2008

This is a super soundtrack. The songs appear in the same order as they do in the movie, so it's easy for young fans to follow along. Adults may have forgotten how many great songs are in this movie. This one is a good value!

5 out of 5 stars I like the music   February 13, 2008
Because its a classic, I guess I'm old. But I know what I like in music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Audio Quality from the Original Film   July 27, 2007

Our daughter loves the movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", so we bought this CD for her. It was a wonderful gift. We were amazed at how well the quality was, especially for an older film that was not originally captured digitally.

5 out of 5 stars great substitute for the movie   March 21, 2007

My 2 year old daughter loves the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and asks to watch it all day long. I will often offer the soundtrack instead, and she will dance and sing along to all her favorite songs.

4 out of 5 stars Great music but less than great sound quality   March 8, 2007

The music from the movie is great but the sound quality on the cd is no where near as good as it could be. I'm not sure why a better recording is not out there but this recording sounds 'tinny'. That said, I want to keep the recording because it's fun to sing along to the songs, etc., but if a better one comes along I would think seriously about trading this one in for a better one.
