Album Description The problem with almost every contemporary female vocalist is that they're always pretending to be something that they're not. Sometimes it's a highly feminine, sophisticated, sexual, love-lost artist with her heart on her sleeve
always pretending that she actually feels something or singing about a great love she never had. The Moldy Peaches co-founder (and goddaughter of Antifolk) Kimya Dawson succeeds by simply being true to herself. There is no empty space between her visions. There is no filler in her songs. Kimya Dawson prevails by being tender, vulnerable, silly and raw. She shows you what she loves and makes you love it, too. She is the quintessential authentic bohemian artist - what almost every smoky nightclub jazz chanteuse wishes she could be. Dawson is the artist-poet skateboard girl. And, most importantly, she is a delicate human sensing device, the only real human on a planet full of androids. What makes her music so unique and amazing is her undiluted humanity; comparable only to Richard Pryor in the way she uses humor and sorrow combined as a personal healing device. Kimya Dawson's new album, Hidden Vagenda (her first studio album after a trilogy of home recordings from 2000 -2003) was recorded in the Bay Area at Mourningwood Studios and in friends' bedrooms, garages and yards. While recording, Dawson was joined by friends Joe Gore, Arion Salazar, Stephan Jenkins, Daniel Johnston, Vanessa Carlton and a children's choir in St. Ouen, France. Hidden Vagenda was co-produced and mixed by Jason Carmer (The Donnas, Run DMC, Third Eye Blind), Arion Salazar and Kimya Dawson.

weird and wonderful. that rare bird: an original. October 12, 2007 i don't really get the whole friendship concept. what do friends do? talk to each other? hold each other and cry when they're sad? sounds boring. every once in a great while however, i do come across an artist who just seems like they would be fun to know. like you would want them for a friend. kimya dawson is one such person. weird and wonderful, ms dawson does something here that is almost impossible anymore: she is a complete original. and so entertaining that religious fanatics would probably want her outlawed. she has a way all her own with both words and music. on first listen she became one of my favorite songwriters of all-time. thanks a ton ms dawson, this album is my best find of 2007.
Goddess Kimya strikes again! June 27, 2007 Hidden Vagenda is at times hilarious, other times heart-wrenching, but always gives the listener a sense of being beautifully uncomfortable. This is a very refreshing piece of work indeed! With topics ranging from suicide, drug abuse and Julian Lennon's inability to write anything but ballads, Hidden Vagenda keeps you on your toes. Some might consider the recording to be Lo-Fi or maybe even downright bad, but the gem here is lyrical songwriting. When one appreciates Kimya for her contribution to this art and for her painfully honest integrity, the low fidelity of the recording becomes quite charming.
Beautiful, thought-provoking, and clever. May 11, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
When my roommate handed me Hidden Vagenda and told me to give it a listen, I was apprehensive. I mean, who is going to give much creedence to a cover that looks like it was Photoshopped by a 12-year-old? How insanely glad am I that I actually listened.
Every song is amazing, he lyrics are clever and often heartbreaking. Her voice is something that almost fades into the background until some lyrics pops out and tells you to listen.
I was in my car driving home one night listening to the CD when suddenly the lyrics to "Anthrax" caught my ear. She captured the emotion of the September 11, 2001 attacks better than anyone else ever could. There is no false sense of patriotism, just bare observation and raw emotion.
Give Kimya a chance, you won't be dissappointed.
thanks to kimya... December 20, 2004 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
as prewar yardsale says, "she used to be cool... now she's really cool." kimya is a very special songwriter. she brings just what the world needs - truth! i enjoyed a recent performance from her in los angeles and it seems she's gotten even better than when she made the record. i think she is a particularly good influence for young people but she strikes a chord with me as well. i wish i could be so... articulate. yeah, i love that she is so straightforward and outspoken without ever over-hyping anything. thanks to kimya, we get a clear reminder of what it means to be open and honest.
Great Album October 25, 2004 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Wow! I have been a kimya fan since the moldy peaches and her first solo album "I'm sorry that sometimes i'm mean" but this is even better. Kimya acheives using a naieve, down to earth method of bringing across subjects that are very deep. Unlike her other albums which were recorded in her bedroom on her 4 track, she recorded at a friends house, and altogether brings across a more group effort. I say that because she has her friends sing on some of the tracks, in fact there is a whole chorus on "I will never forget" and it is stunning. this is a great album! I luv u kimya.
