| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com The Hughes brothers' '00 documentary took an unflinching, often amusing look at the street sales/general management end of the World's Oldest Profession. Its soundtrack was fat with old-school pimp-soul grooves, quickly becoming a mixer's delight and rich source for samples -- even if it didn't initially receive an official release. This collection addresses that oversight with a street-smart vengeance, culling together an eclectic, libido-lubed menage a soul that spans the punk-funk of Rick James and the erstwhile jazz of George Duke, and dotted with superstars (Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, WAR) and lesser-known charters (Leon Haywood, Faze-O, Slave) whose contributions are intermixed with colorful comments from the film's most memorable, er, entrepreneurs. A bonus DVD contains 70 minutes of raw, mostly unedited interviews and outtakes with eight of the film's subjects, including an insightful, newly rediscovered reel of comments by Snoop Dogg once thought lost. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description Available for the first time ever--the original soundtrack, plus a bonus DVD of outtakes from the film! American Pimp, the feature documentary by the Hughes Bros. that earned a Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury nomination, explored the fascinating subculture of street pimps. Now available for the first time is the highly-anticipated soundtrack from the film. The soundtrack features 13 pimp-approved songs taken from and inspired by the original film, interspersed with unforgettable and repeatable sound bites from this film's classic pimp-culture dialogue. A bonus DVD of unreleased film footage including extended interviews with Snoop Dogg and the other ghetto-fabulous characters, such as veteran pimps Rosebudd, Payroll and Ken Red, plus newcomers Charm, C-Note and T-Mack is included in the package.

Can't be a Mack without the Godfather November 8, 2008 American Pimp is a great documentary. I'd like to see an updated one. I too thought the music was straight off the street. But to leave off "The Godfather of Soul" James Brown's "The Boss" was "square".
Well worth the price! June 6, 2005 When I first saw the documentary "American Pimp", one of my first reactions was that I hoped a soundtrack was available! The choice of tracks suits the film well, and is an excellent choice of soul, jazz and funk that gives a great feel that is totally appropriate to the subject, and puts the listener right in the middle of the scene.
The tracks are all well chosen, but to me some of the best tracks were from artists like Fazo-O, War and Edwin Starr. Add to the fact that a bonus DVD is included with additional footage (including the 'lost' Snoop interview), and you get an excellent value for the money. Don't pass it up if you are a fan of the film or the musical style.
