| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Luomo is the newest alias of the artist known best as Vladislav Delay, whose austerely minimalist dub-influenced tech-house is the stock in trade of the Chain Reaction and (to a lesser extent) Mille Plateaux labels. The extent to which fans of that sound are interested in this release should be partly the extent to which their tastes extend to the application of that aesthetic to vocal house-music tracks, which is what Mille Plateaux's Force Tracks imprint was created to explore. Although the more abstract house producers have often treated singers as source material hardly different from the electronic elements of the mix, the notion that vocals represent a "human" element, or at least a connection to the world of song, is hard to shake. Luomo may indeed shake you of that idea, as the vocals are just another one of the many layers on these dense tracks, often not appearing until after many minutes of slow accretion of sounds, at which time a few words or phrases are electronically processed and looped endlessly. All of which makes the track "Tessio" even more startling, when a full-fledged multi-voiced R&B song worthy of the Paradise Garage suddenly appears. Even from a musician who has been heading in a half-dozen directions at once over the past year, this is quite a surprising release. -Bob Bannister

how i hate house March 29, 2005 1 out of 12 found this review helpful
I really hate this 4/4 thump: to me it means lack of inventiveness creativity originality. And then for it is too fast. I am a slow person. I like music with a more relaxed pace. This is why i like Depeche Mode. I own this record but i never listen to it.Please if you have feedback contact me at carlogiova@yahoo.it Thanks
A CULT-CLASSIC!!! December 17, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
You may be blown away by the length of most of the songs on Luomo's Vocal City, but for the extended durations you will be moved like no other Dance CD out there. Chalked full of thunderous basslines, electrifying synth-rhythms, minimal vocals and superb mixing, "Vocal City" is sure to become, if it isn't already, a cult-classic. This is the perfect party CD to throw in if you don't want to change out CDs all night, especially at the wrong times!
Don't listen to that clueless guy who gave only one star April 20, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This disc appeared when micro/click house producers started mimicking each other...Delay proved his signature deep sea bubbling soundscape can work really well with soulful house music.Although not in the same vein, I recommend those who want to listen to more of microhouse stuff that are not cliched to try Akufen or Geez'n'Gosh, Pantytec, and Safety Scissors.
Incredible January 21, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This album is almost pure vibe. The kind of vibe that expands your head and your emotions. This album is both funky, and smooth, and its message is clear. There is a certain clairity that comes from listening to this album not a lot unlike someone who just got done crying and as such feelss emotionaly renewed. Very organic, very interesting... , very soulfull. I discovered Vladislav, through Luomo... and I wouldn't have wanted to be introduced any other way. :)
Empty house sounds not always sweet Zen October 31, 2001 4 out of 26 found this review helpful
This is such a depressing record considering what Vladislav Delay is capable of. The other reviews are right, this is house music, or microhouse, or whatever you want to call it. You know what I call it? Pretty darn lame. The basic premise of my review, which no one has asked me to write, is that house music is not meant for your house. I can imagine if I was all bleary-eyed in a club, drinking soda and chatting up someone beautiful with intentions of offering to buy her a soda, that I might enjoy the thought of dancing to this cd. AT A CLUB. Why own this music? It is not meant to be listened to with a discerning ear. This is beats, incapable of becoming more than that. You'll listen to this cd and think, why do I own this? It's expensive, it's bland, it's dancefloor music, and I have no dancefloor in my apartment. I have all of Vladislav Delay's albums under that name, Mutila is my especial favourite, because it shows Delay at his most adept, a man who can mouse-click his way towards something approaching the physical, the mental, and the orchestral. He can, effectively, be an artist of many nuances. Luomo, I suspect, is how Delay pays some bills. It's his club trax, and they suck on my stereo. My bet is that if you like a dum-dum-dum-dum-dum beat that goes on forever (ie, house music) but you want something like that to listen to at home, try Gas. His stuff is minimal, but not empty.
