The new album covers plenty of ground musically, from barn-burning rockers and retro-feeling story tunes to soul-searing ballads and bonified weepers. Andy translates each tale perfectly, channeling his bluesy, soulful side on tracks like "All About The Money," a cautionary tale about the root of all evil, and "Long Way Down," a wailing good time of a tune about the power of a woman's charms. His crystal clear vocals weigh heavy with anguish on "What If It's Me," a song about a man who finally realizes why his relationships keep crashing and burning, as well as on the power ballad "Tears And Time." And contemplative cuts like "If You Had Called Yesterday" and the masterfully written "Time Is A Gypsy" find Andy testifying in the bittersweet tones of a man who has crossed that line of no return in a relationship. He even channels a bit of his inner Elvis on "You Can't Drive My Cadillac," a fun, rockabilly-tinged ode to the American classic that lets a woman know just how far she can push her man. And he proves he can still rock with the best of them on the self-penned "Long Stretch Of Lonesome," a pounding, thumping backbeat of a Waylon tune that is an unapologetic love song to the open road and its unfettering promise. A fitting close to the record is Andy's cover of the old 70's LeRoux classic, "New Orleans Ladies." A fitting close to the record is Andy's cover of the old 70's LeRoux classic, "New Orleans Ladies." Laid down not long after Hurricane Katrina hit his home state, Andy felt it a proper way to pay tribute to the Louisiana roots that factor into his sound so heavily. The moment he playfully challenges, "Hey Y'all, Check This Out," in the opening notes of the CD, one knows that you're in for some serious fun and entertainment. Eagerly anticipating Andy's new release, I was comforted to hear the classic Griggs back on the CD player! His soulful sound has touched me since his first release & its good to be connected again! Give Andy a shot - you won't be disappointed!

Distinctive, powerful and emotional modern country-rock vocals June 3, 2008
After a successful three-CD run at RCA that yielded a pair of top-10 album entries and six top-10 singles, Nashville country-rocker Griggs moved to the indie Montage label. This latest release makes good on the huskier promise his voice always implied, by doing away with the mannered arrangements with which he was framed at RCA. His hand-picked producer, Frank Myers, loads up muscled guitars, bass and drums, ala Montgomery Gentry and Big & Rich, and spurs Griggs to dig down for grittier performances. Unlike the Muzik Mafia's cohorts, Griggs mostly sings without irony, pouring emotion into the lyrics of upbeat rockers, banjo-lined country tunes and ballads alike. This isn't to suggest he can't lighten up, as he does in reading the riot act of "You Can't Drive My Cadillac," but it's the exception in a program of serious songs. The album's first singles, "Tattoo Rose" and "What If It's Me" stalled in the mid-50s, but that's more a reflection on country radio's MOR tastes (and major label dependency) than the energy and quality of Griggs' work. Those who liked Griggs voice but found his RCA releases limited by Nashville's studio sound should give him a second listen; fans will enjoy hearing his passion unleashed. [2008 hyperbolium dot com]
country rock with a southern flavor May 29, 2008
andy griggs has one of the richest voices in country music today.
i knew this CD was gonna be good and it has become one of my favorites.
there are ballads and country rockers. andy griggs voice, his band,
and the background singers just fall into place with ease. this is by far
his best CD since his 1999 debut. he has his own style. great CD
