5 out of 5 stars Jeez   June 6, 2009

This review is being written by a HUGE Genesis fan. Gabriel's Genesis was m y favorite period , followed by the Phil Collins vocal-led period up to "Duke" , after that they turned into a different band.
With all of that being said , "Unifaun" is the album that Genesis could have , but didn't make.
Obviously this recording is a tribute to Genesis. It is NOT , however , a copy of Genesis. The music and vocals fall remarkably close to the "Wind And Wuthering" "Trick Of The Tail" era of Genesis. At several times in listening to this recording , I forgot it wasn't Genesis.
NO GENESIS FAN SHOULD BE WITHOUT THIS RECORDING !!!! Here's hoping Unifaun have another one in them.

5 out of 5 stars Everything old is new again..?!...   May 25, 2009

This is, quite simply, one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years. Yes, the sonic allusions to '74-'77 Genesis are at times as subtle as a sledgehammer (Requisite Mellotron choirs, ARP Soloist sounds, 'A Way Out' = 'Carpet Crawlers', complete with 16th note RMI piano figure, etc.) but the material is well-written, beautifully arranged and wonderfully played & produced. More importantly, there is a MAGIC in this music that you don't often hear these days - some of the instrumental passages are just sublime. It is interesting to me that my 12 year-old son, probably in view of the artistic paucity of the material popular with his own generation, has really taken to this album. It seems that true musical craftsmanship never goes out of style, no matter which decade it 'refers' to.

Bravo! Can't wait for the 2nd album....

This is a good cd but disappointing,i give it 3 stars for the attempt. Most Definetly not what i expected, the guys had a good idea but it falls way short of what people are calling a classic Genesis album never made,,has no power or punch, all songs sound the same.It an ok cd but for true Genesis fans such as myself i have to say dont get overexcited by other reviews giving it 5 stars.I saw Genesis 8 times from 1976 thru 87 and this cd just doesnt come close to the magic and power of the real Genesis. The last song is by far the best on this cd.

This is simply a great CD! Hasn't left my CD player for weeks. OK, the early Genesis style is noted, but this isn't a cover band. The music is certainly in the style of 70's era Genesis but it is original music. There are a lot of "melody-prog" bands working today and Unifaun is one of them but their music stands on its own and isn't really that derivative. The vocals are an interesting blend of Gabriel and Collins sounding voices; the keyboard and guitar work is exemplary. "Rehacksis" sounds like a lost track from "Trick of the Tail" or "Please don't Touch." "Welcome to the Farm" is the standout single of the CD and should be an FM radio hit (if FM radio didn't suck). All in all a fantastic debut, now we wait for the follow-up.....

4 out of 5 stars Sounds just like a missing, classic Genesis album!   February 21, 2009

Sylvan and Bonamici make no apologies for sounding like vintage Genesis. In fact, that was their intent all along, to pay tribute one of the greatest prog-rock bands of all time. Sylvan's vocals sounds like a cross between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, which is kind of eery at times.

All the classic Genesis song writing elements are present, especially during "Quest for the Last Virtue" which features a Gabriel inspired spoken section and a Tony Banks inspired mellotron solo. "Rehacksis" is a great instrumental that sounds like it was left off "Wind and Wuthering" or "Trick of the Tale". Heck, even my Uncle, an old school Genesis fan, thought these were studio outtakes at first. That's how closely the song structures and execution mirror the classic 70's sound of Genesis. Add in the clean, modern sound production and you have a real winner.

As I said, Unifaun will not win any awards for originality. And yet, they are far more than a Genesis cover band. I'd recommend this to any fan of classic Gabriel / Hackett era Genesis. This is like a trip down memory lane with a new friend.
