Tis Great October 6, 2008 It's a very informative DVD, just as if your'e sitting in Sheri's class. I took notes while watching it so as not to forget some important tips and facts. The organization and humor make it a GREAT DVD!!!
Realistic and helpful - like being in class. September 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Sheri Bayles' DVD series is informative and realistic. We found it essential because we elected not to pay for classes at the hospital. This was much more at our own pace, and at our liesure. And we can review them as often as we wish. The series has a cable-access production value to it, but do not let that dissuade you. The focus is on INFORMATION, NOT on the backlighting and camera angles. You are in class basically, and your focus is on the instructor. It works well without a lot of fluff.
Sheri is very NY/NJ, but she didn't annoy me, and I'm from Texas!! This kind of information needs to be presented and disseminated in a very matter-of-fact way and she succeeds. She is a talker, which is perfectly suited to her line of work, and for this DVD series. She makes no pretense of being a comedienne, but allows her natural personality to show often, with some hits and some misses, but no big deal. She is very demonstrative. And DOING always beats telling when it comes to educating, so to me that was a plus. We were never bored or offended in any way.
I can't think of any questions we had which were not answered in this series, especially in regard to pain, signs of labor, labor progression, what to expect from doctors and hospital staff, and all of the normal and mundane things in between that we all angst about leading up to the big day. And her studio class question-and-answer interactions were helpful too, although not a big part of the whole presentation.
Any personal views expressed were always balanced and qualified in my opinion, and based on her past experiences. I never felt preached to, or like an unwitting victim of an infomercial. We got it. However; all new parents should always educate themselves on any subject matter they are unsure about, and strive to make informed decisions on their own.
All in all, these DVD's were a great tutor for our first childbirth experience, and I readily recommend them.
Laugh and Learn - Excellent September 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you prefer to be at home instead of spending 8-10 hours at a hospital or a classroom for a Lamaze class, this is the video to get. You feel like you are in the class. Instead, you are in your pajamas if you want. You can rewind if you miss something...fast forward if you know it already...you can watch the video as many times as you want so everything sinks in. The speaker is clear, funny and easy to understand. Very educational video...I recommend it highly. It was convenient. I reviewed the material with friends that have gone to other classes in person and all of the material was the same plus some other material they hadn't gone over. Definitely worth it. Speaker is big on natural births...so if are biased, you may be uncomfortable with that...my only 'con' for those that are into scheduled c-sections...
Great Series August 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We ordered this because we couldn't get to a live class. This was a great resource, and I'm so glad we got it. There is so much information that made us both feel more at ease. It was great to really know what to expect. I highly recommend this!
Pleasantly surprised! August 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading reviews here, I was hesitant to purchase this DVD, but all the classes at our local hospital were booked solid and I figured...why not? I think some people need to lighten up. She was just trying to give the needed information and make it entertaining and not dull. My husband and I really enjoyed it. We learned a lot and the information was repeated and reinforced so we weren't left asking questions about what we learned. Of course, she prefers natural childbirth and there is the promotion about Viacord, but we had our personal decisions on these matters already and ignored her opinion on these topics. We really were glad we bought this and watched it as we feel much more prepared for what we will encounter in less than two months! Who knows what kind of person would have taught a class at our local hospital? This was very informative and we recommend it. We're first time parents and thought this DVD was very worthwhile.
