Saxophonist Jr. Walker was the most gutbucket of Motown's consistent '60s hit makers. Even when trying his hardest to conform to label formulas ("What Does It Take [To Win Your Love]," "Gotta Hold On to This Feeling"), he sounded like he'd be just as much at home in the backroom of a barbecue joint. When pursuing his muse in even more minimalist form ("Shotgun," "[I'm a] Road Runner," the smoky "Cleo's Mood"), he sounded like the owner of the place. --Rickey Wright

The Ultimate! July 25, 2008
I was lent this compact disk by a friend at work. I ripped it on my computer, and after listening to it a couple of times, I knew I had to add it to my collection! This is motown, rhythm and blues, soul and brass all rolled into one. The Ultimate!!!!

Motown's "The Ultimate Collection" Series Among The Best August 23, 2007

A search in Music under the heading Ultimate Collection will garner you thousands of hits, and even searching in Album Title will result in quite a few, ranging from Benny Hill and George Formby to 10cc and The Who, and just about everyone in between. Even Motown uses Ultimate Collection on a number of their CDs, but the best of the lot where they are concerned is this series, each with 25 tracks and similar cover art by David Irvin, and involving Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Marvelettes, Martha (Reeves) & The Vandellas, Gladys Knight & The Pips, and Mary Wells.
This one covers the career of one Autry DeWalt Walker, better known as Jr., and his band of all-stars, which included guitarist Willie Woods, organist Vic Thomas, and drummer James Graves. From their initial smash hit Shotgun [# 1 R&B/# 4 Billboard Pop Hot 100] in 1965 to their last in 1973, Gimme That Beat Part 1 [# 50 R&B/# 101 Hot 100 "bubble under"], they scored 21 Hot 100 and 24 R&B hit singles and added several best-selling LPs, all for the Soul label, and many of them pure instrumentals.
Walker would later add one additional solo R&B hit in 1976 for Soul (I'm So Glad), and another in 1970 for the Whitfield label (Wishing On A Star). In 1981 he would be the featured sax player on Foreigner's hit Urgent (# 4), and would appear in the 1988 movie Tapeheads.
In this volume you get almost all of his hit singles, with the most notable omissions being his take on the Neil Diamond hit, Holly Holy [# 33 R&B/# 75 Hot 100 in 1971] and its flipside, Carry Your Own Load [# 50 R&B/# 117 Hot 100 "bubble under"]. Non-hits included are at track 9 [the flip of Do The Boomerang], track 12 [the flip of Come See About Me]; and tracks 14, 17, and 25.
A complete discography of the contents is included, along with four pages of liner notes by Allan (Dr. Licks) Slutsky, author of the book Standing In The Shadows Of Motown: The Life And Music Of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson.
Drummer Graves died in a 1967 automobile accident, while Woods passed away at age 60 in 1997. Yet another in a growing list of artists way overdue for induction into the R&R Hall of Fame. This is an important and essential addition to any musical library seeking to capture the essence of the music of the 1960s and 1970s.

I one of people who do not have much liking for much of the music of today, I guess you can say I'm into the what they call 'Old School' style
of music.
This CD by Jr. Walker & the All-Stars has so much 'Soul' that it brings back that spirit when artist could sing and they were able to carry
a message in their songs where it made you feel good a time when artist could play instruments. To understand what I'm trying to say go to number 23 on this CD 'Way back home' I don't have
to say much more. If this CD do not move you then you don't have SOUL.

Nobody, I mean nobody, played saxophone like Junior Walker. When he passed away several years ago, the world of Rock and Soul suffered a major loss. This collection provides a rich history of Junior and his legacy as an artist. I challenge anyone to listen to songs like "Home Cookin", the seminal "Shotgun", "How Sweet it Is", and numerous others, and see if you can sit still. I guarantee you'll be moving to the music! But Junior's sax can evoke other moods as well. On "What Does It Take", (a major hit in 1969, and one of my all-time favorite songs), you can feel the despair and desperation in his voice and sax. He also reaches the heighths of happiness and exuberance on songs such as: "Gotta Hold On To This Feeling", "Take Me Girl I'm Ready", and "Do You See My Love".
I was privileged to see Junior Walker and the All Stars live in concert twice. This CD stimulates warm memories for me, and every song is a winner. Junior, I miss you, man.
