Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.co.uk
It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation. This is Love, conceived by the Fabs' former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil's Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles' last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a melange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, "toppermost of the poppermost." There's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter"), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin's willingness to go out on a limb with such a project. While purists may complain that the cut 'n' paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it'll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they've sounded on CD) and audacious nature. --Thom Allott

5 out of 5 stars An amazing (and remixed) trip down memory lane for every fan   October 2, 2008
OK, you are talking to a pretty jaded Beatles fan here. It seems that every 5 to 6 years, Capitol Records (and EMI) just have to push some new Beatles "product" on the unsuspecting public. Let's take a minute here and think at all of the compilations the just re-hash their original material. Past Masters, 1, Rock And Roll Music, Love Songs, Reel Music... (I know I am throwing in some old vinyl LP's here but you get the message)So when this came out you can imagine my lack of enthusiasm. Yeah OK, it's a soundtrack to a show. Big deal. Yeah so some of the songs have been remixed...mega yawn. Just another let's fleece the Beatles fan out of more money to prop up our business model this year album. A friend of mine told me to give it a listen...if I was half the Beatles (and music) fan he knows I am that I would enjoy it thoroughly. So I did. I put it in my CD player...and heard the birds chirping...and the vocal tracks of "Because"...then the swell started. Low, rising, getting louder until you hear the first crashing chord of "A Hard Day's Night", and then starts this amazing CD. I turned it off after the first two songs, waiting for the weekend where I could hear the entire CD on my way down to the beach so it would not be interrupted.

What you have here is a CD remixed by the Beatles original producer, George Martin and his son. What they have done is taken parts of Beatles songs and mixed them with other Beatles songs, making what is refered to as a "mash-up". So in one track, you will actually hear "Drive My Car" infused with the guitar solo from "Taxman". My personal favorite mash-up is the vocals of "Within You Without You" mashed up with the instrumentation of "Tomorrow Never Knows". The results are simply amazing.

Not every song gets this treatment though...for instance, the original demo for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is used with an orchetral score filling in the second and third verse. Absolutely beautiful. "Hey Jude" also deserves a mention because it's been shortened from the absolutely ponderous 7 minute version down, while at one point taking out everything except the vocals, then adding the bass in before everything comes in again. Makes me wonder why they didn't do that on the original version. Would have made it much more listenable and enjoyable in my opinion. Even if you know every song by heart, there is something a little different in each mix you can pick out from the original.

The only track to me that really doesn't sound good is "Octopus's Garden", it just tries too hard to fit in with the rest of the well-mixed songs and it just doesn't. Well, considering how great the rest of this CD is I can forgive its inclusion.

I know some people see this akin to painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa (which to me is a pretty elitist attitude). And this does have the opportunity to become a disaster, but with the Martins at the helm, this instead is an enjoyable career spanning CD. The words tastefully done I think are appropriate here. If you are a Beatles fan (new or old) I really cannot reccommend this CD enough. Everybody who has heard this just loves it. I just never get tired of listening to this CD, simple as that. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars love love love   September 28, 2008
I was in Vegas about a year and a half ago and I stumbled upon the LOVE theater at the mirage. I went in to take a peek and it was so amazing. the love store was so awesome, overflowing with beatles memorabilia and I wanted to buy the love cd but I figured I could find it a tad bit cheaper somewhere else. so I came home and bought it on here and instantly fell in love with it. there are a few songs I'm kind of "eh" with but overall, I think this cd is a great add to the beatles catalog. I do think seeing the show will give the cd a little more understanding to those who think "what the hell is this?". I'll also add that the show itself is by far one of the most wonderful things I've ever encountered in my short life. I just saw it in July and by "a day in the life" I was kind of choked up. It's a beautiful experience for any beatles fan and I strongly recommend both the cd and the show.

4 out of 5 stars This is not the newest Beatles album   September 24, 2008
A lot of people are forgetting that the music from "Love" was actually made for the Cirque du Soleil show of the same name. Having said that I think "Love" is a great work for a Cirque du Soleil show and, even though I haven't watched the show, it seems to me that the music is fitting for it. Listening to it I could just imagine what kind of acrobatics and tricks would be performed to the music, which tells me that the music did what it was supposed to do.

I speak as a Beatles fan when I say this, George Martin did an amazing job. It's hard to imagine how difficult it must be for someone who worked so closely with the songs to come up with such innovative and fresh remixes.

Drive My Car/The Word/What You're Doing (anyone catch that Taxman solo in there?) and Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows stand out for me the most. However I found myself listening attentively to all of the songs trying to identify the various snippets and overlaps, and I was surprised to find so many of them hidden seamlessly into the songs.

Of course as a Beatles fan it can be cringe-inducing to hear our beloved tunes changed and tampered with in this manner, and yes there were some parts here and there that I found hard to accept. Overall though I would say this was a successful project because it was able to fulfill it's ultimate goal, which was to create great music for the Cirque du Soleil show and NOT necessarily to adhere to Beatles fans. George Martin deserves a lot of credit.

5 out of 5 stars You must add this to your Beatles collection   September 20, 2008
Great seller. Fast delivery. Exscellent communication. One of the best compilations and mixes of Beatles music ever. When it comes to the Beatles, it doesn't get much better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Dug It   September 13, 2008
It's a fun ride since you already know all the songs, and here's this over-the-top mixing, "enhancing" elements you knew were there, and putting some earlier Beatles within the context of the great psychedelic classics. If anyone was qualified to undertake a project like this, it was George Martin. It's a great mix-and-match medley of Beatles songs that, in my opinion, gets better as the cd continues. It's cool to listen to him (Martin) create this sound collage, and you get the feeling he wasn't taking things too seriously as he did it - though it's a piece of work in itself - and fun to pick out pieces that you'll recognize from all over the place in these re-worked, re-mixed songs. Besides being re-psychedelicized, the sound is incredibly clear.. hmmm, heightened clarity - and the Beatles? Sounds about right!
