When Whitesnake broke into the spotlight with Slide It In (1984), a battalion of cynical critics predicted the band's success couldn't last, but Coverdale and company silenced all the naysayers with 1987's self-titled album, which rocketed to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart. The record was driven by the pumping rocker "Here I Go Again" and the tender power ballad "Is This Love," but the band's mainstream appeal might have had as much to do with their unabashedly sexual videos as with their bubblegum metal. The clips, which seemed to splash across MTV every 20 minutes, starred Coverdale's girlfriend and B-movie actress Tawny Kitaen, and highlighted her busty, scantily clad body in various provocative poses. This is one of the greatest albums to come out in the 80s. It is quite possibly still one of the greatest albums of all time.
BAD BAD BOYS! February 9, 2008
Jon Sykes, Jon Sykes, Jon 'Effin' Sykes!!! His guitar work on this CD is absolute ball buster! If I only liked the track Still of The Night this disc would still be worth it but Sykes slashes and burns throughout the disc. And his guitar tone is monster! And I say this as a drummer, not a guitar player, that's how impressive Sykes is. You wanna hear some fierce guitar work then this CD is the real deal. Air guitar alert!!

I love reading reviews that slam certain artists for being too "commercial" and whatnot. So what. I was 15 years old when I bought this cassette and I wore it out during my freshman year of high school. At the time I had no idea who Deep Purple or Thin Lizzy was and probably wouldn't have cared.
I still have the original cassette that I bought in 1987. I recently converted it to an mp3 so I could get it onto my iPod and don't regret it a bit. Yes, some of the songs are cheesy and "glam" but it will definitely take you back in time.
If you loved them in the '80s or you're a fan of this genre you should definitely get this. Don't be embarrassed. Go get some tight leather pants and a pretty scarf and you'll be just fine.

The band is incredible here, the sound is "strong", John Sykes is at the top of his carrer, you must have this cd, if you don't like 1987, you don't like Whitesnake!
1987, a great year for the Purple family tree April 16, 2007

First there was Deep Purple's "The House of Blue Light" from January 1987, and then, "Whitesnake" [the album] from March 1987. Whitesnake's turned out to be the more popular album, maybe the most popular album of the year because of it's commercial appeal, and the music videos that helped to sell it, but make no mistake it's a really good album. But Deep Purple's was even better in my opinion, a far less commercial rock album who's videos were unfortunately banned by MTV, which helped keep it out of the Billboard top 20.
Finally, I'm so tired of reading about the Whitesnake songs from this album being Led Zeppelin rip offs. Coverdale has already confirmed that a lot of the riffs come from Deep Purple rehearsal tapes back in the mid seventies when Coverdale was their lead singer. These riffs are "borrowed" from Ritchie Blackmore, not Jimmy Page. Case closed!
I advise getting both of these great rock albums of 1987:
