"I ride the waves of each deathly breath / Waiting to be awoken and born by your calling." So sings Sheila Chandra on Moonsung's "Waiting," effectively giving plain words to the actual experience of her remarkable genesis through both breath and sound. Quite simply, Chandra's evolution of making sounds that in turn make music has given her permanent reverberation in a temporal world. A career that began as a teen pop star fronting Monsoon in the early '80s has not only deepened and matured but also broken ground with her last three LPs. It is from these recordings that Moonsung is culled, with the addition of two new tracks. Whether locking into unaccompanied drone, melody based on Indian raga, or revisionist folk balladry, Chandra's mutable voice is an instrument like no other, channeling that which is nothing if not ancient past and prognostication at once. --Paige La Grone

1 out of 5 stars ZZzzzzzzzzz   March 30, 2006

First let me say I agree with some of the reviewers here that this lady's voice is phenomenal, totally beautiful. But this is music to meditate by, booooring is putting it lightly. A good comparison would be like Enya, but without any "pep" whatsoever, totally flat. Add to that the fact that most of the tracks are basically acappella, which makes it even more unbearable. But if you don't mind music to read or meditate to, then you will probably enjoy this incredible voice.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped for   November 17, 2005

I recently discovered Shelia Chandra's music on her "Quiet" album, and was riveted by her mesmerizing lyrical talents and the meditative quality of the music she created. I then purchased Roots And Wings, and was equally pleased with the more varied tracks, but the same hauntingly beautiful lyrical quality and fascinating use of non-word 'bols'. So in my eagerness to add to my Shelia Chandra library, I ordered "Moonsung", and was terribly disappointed. Insteaded of hauntingly beautiful, I found it to be just haunting. Granted, this is a totally different style than the 2 aforementioned albums, but it did not give me the same peaceful, energized feeling...intead it just left me annoyed and depressed. Not my cup of tea, but perhaps others would like it. I recommend you listen to the clips before purchasing, since not all albums from the same artist will contain the same style of music.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Ease   April 28, 2003

Sheila Chandra deserves to be heard. On "Moonsung," Chandra's simplistic droning form gives rise to an otherworldly voice. The space the sparse arrangements creates, allows Chandra's crystalline voice to breathe. I liken the whole of "Moonsung," to something in the neighborhood of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's spiritual Qwalli chants. Don't read me wrong--the sound is different, but Chandra's Indian raga style puts you in the neighborhood of spiritual chants, but just with some folk balladry mixed in for good measure.

One of the more interesting tracks is "Speaking in Tongues III," in which Chandra pulls off this new age world music rebirth of bebop. It is what would happen if Ella Fitzgerald had been from India and sniffed a whole lot of incense. It truly is remarkable what Chandra can do with her voice as a primary instrument. The only fault I can find with this disc is that the CD's strength is also a weakness. The simplistic arrangements can give off a kind of "sameness" that hurts the album only ever so slightly when listened to all the way through. Bottom line, Sheila Chandra sings and shoots the moon. Turn off the lights, turn on the lava lap, and meditate while Sheila drones.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible, Soothing and Beautiful Journey   February 7, 2003

When a friend of mine asked me if I would listen to this album I was skeptical to say the least, but I agreed to listen nonetheless. Oh, what rewards can come with so little risk. It turned out that I found Sheila Chandra's vocal range, style and tonality to be one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. The uniqueness of her Hindu background and culture of the British Isles collide to produce a sound like no other I have ever heard. I could be dreaming in Bombay or Dublin and never have imagined the balance demonstrated in this work. A must have for soothing the soul. If "Heaven" has a soundtrack, this album should be included on it. Only "criticism" is the track "Speaking in Tongues". While further demonstrating Sheila's incredible talent, it jars you back from the meditative state that the rest of the tracks work so hard to induce. Please be advised that this is mostly a collection (A "Best of", if you will), so if you own other Sheila Chandra works you may duplicate some tracks.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing experience   January 29, 2003

when I first purchased this CD, I was a little dissappointed because it was not the type of Indian music I was expecting. However, I gave it a chance and it's amazing. Sheila Chandra's voice is extremely soothing. There is an eclectic mix of her Indian and British roots. Song number 9 on this CD is a perfect example; there is a mix of traditional Latin and Hindi in the lyrics. This is truly a beautiful CD to fall asleep to or to just relax.
