3 out of 5 stars Sound is Great... Functions are a bummer...   November 8, 2008
Because I am impatient I actually have two of these radios; one at work and one as my alarm clock. I bought a receptor several years ago and loved it. Best clock radio I ever owned. However, while the new style Solo has good reception and the sound is what you expect from Boston Acoustic, the functionality of this clock radio is a bummer. To use the sleep function, you have to turn small knobs and read very small print... I can't do it. All in all, I love the sound, reception, etc... But the Receptor has it all over the Solo. Best to you!

3 out of 5 stars Great Sound and Function. Display Too Bright at Night.   October 30, 2008
I received this Boston Acoustics clock radio about a month ago, but have yet to switch to it from my 20 year old Sony. The sound is great, but 15 years ago I modified my Sony to accept a jack for external speakers, so the improvement isn't what it might be. The blue LED backlight for the display is my problem. It's so bright that even at the lowest setting it lights up the whole room at night. I used to feel that the Sony's display was too bright, but I've gotten used to it, and I may eventually do that with this one.

The ambient light sensor works, and raises and lowers the brightness in response to the nightstand light going on or off, but in the daylight at the lowest setting I can't read the display across the room. So the variation in display brightness just isn't large enough for me.

Of course, your mileage may vary, and this may be the best clock radio on the market for you. But if you have very low light levels in your bedroom and you want it that way, you may not be happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars Very happy with mine....   October 29, 2008
Received mine a few days ago and loved the great sound from this radio. Have had no problems with mine. I can honestly say it's the best sounding radio I've ever heard from a small clock radio, although I've never heard a Bose. Can there really be $400 better sound coming out of a Bose over this ? I know Bose is the best. The features on this radio are a little strange to set versus other radios I've had, but you get used to them and they are not difficult, just very different to set from most clock radios. To me this radio is worth its weight in gold and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Works for me.   October 28, 2008
Picks up clearly what on other radios is a sometimes marginal signal for my favorite local station, and the sound quality, like that of my other older BA clock radio, is just great. The little scrolling menu for sleep, alarm, and other functions isn't very intuitive and hard to work in the dark without my eyeglasses |^( maybe after a while my fingers will learn the moves. For the price, it's an excellent little unit overall, and if you rotate it to the vertical orientation (the dial rotates) it has a smaller footprint for nightstands full of books, wineglasses, and pencil cups.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent clock radio   October 27, 2008
I've had the Solo for a few weeks now and really like it. I keep it next to the bed and love the rich sound. Very impressive. I stayed in a hotel recently where they had the Tivoli Model Three clock radio, and that sure is beautiful, but the FM reception was somewhat "hissy." The Solo has crystal clear reception. I also like the sleep timer, which goes up to 90 minutes, so I don't have to worry about having the radio playing all night. The brightness of the face can be adjusted so it's not like a beacon at night. The alarm starts out softly and gradually gets louder. A simple touch anywhere on the metal trim activates the snooze. No trouble there at all. The only "negative" I've encountered is its looks. It's actually a pretty nice looking radio, and I love how you can have it vertical or horizontal. It's just not as nice looking as the Tivoli, but as I mentioned above, I like the sound and performance of the Solo better. And best of all, it's significantly cheaper. Overall a really great radio. I highly recommend it.
