Good DVD recorder, nice picture November 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Update: Oops! So sorry JVC! Please disregard my one-star review. Amazon's "edit review" won't let me change the one-star rating. Turns out the lightning also damaged the "in" jacks on my TV. Really odd that turning off and back on the dvd player restarted the picture though! I would've sworn it was the player! This JVC DRMV100B DVD/VCR combo is a good product. The playback picture is wonderful, recording a dvd is no more complicated than any other DVD recorder I've used, and having the vcr and dvd recorder in one unit is a real space-saver. I'm happy with it now that I know what the real problem was!
Old review: I bought this unit to replace my Toshiba dvd recorder/vcr combo that was hit by lightning through my cable connection. I have only owned this vcr/dvd combo for 2 1/2 months. While watching dvds or even just watching video from my camcorder plugged into this JVC combo unit, the picture will go black after a few minutes of watching. The only way to make the picture come back is to turn the JVC combo unit off and then back on (kinda like resetting it).
JVC Has Made Some JUNK zero stars November 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have wanted this unit for so long. The VCR WILL NOT TRACK. No matter how much you try to correct it , you are wasting your time. If you take out the tape and put it back in so it can supposedly "fix" the tracking - it goes in fast forward - if you speak chipmunk you might can understand it. The picture is dark and "snows" a lot and always a white line across the bottom. How am I supposed to transfer VHS tapes when it can't even play one . Yes- using brand new VHS tapes. You people that love yours - you got lucky !! Very upset with JVC - I have all JVC equipment and it has all been the best. Don't know what happened with this unit.
any minor DTV signal glitch kills recording October 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The recording logic is fatally flawed. The smallest signal glitch for digital broadcast (wind blows and shakes your antennae, etc.) will kill your programmed recording. The chance of actually completing a timed recording is VERY SMALL. This does not happen when watching DTV, you just see a minor glitch and it recovers. But the recording logic decides it should just stop recording, even if the glitch clears up a split second later. JVC really needs to fix its firmware otherwise this product is doomed on the market. When I posted this review, around 5 other reviewers for this product have had similar problems with timed recordings (read the other reviews and see for yourself).
You can sometimes compensate by recording analog channels, but then you don't benefit from DTV. And after the DTV transition, this unit will be useless for recording.
Everything else seems fine, but since I bought this as a DTV broadcast recorder, this is a fatal flaw to me.
Machine Overheats, Stops Recording, All Around Inferior October 31, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First of all, I immediately noticed the machine runs too hot, which is not good for my DVDs and my VHS tapes which are very hot to the touch when I take them out of the machine (it also heats the room up!); it gets very hot near the back, where apparently the laser is situated, but the vents are located on the sides toward the front of the machine. I've never had this problem with other DVD players. After two weeks I exchanged the machine, but the second one also ran hot.
After another two weeks with the new machine, I was dubbing a VHS tape which I had recorded a show on, onto a DVD which I had successfully taped 3 other show, when 16 minutes into dubbing it gave me a copy-protected message. So now I can't even dub/transfer VHS tapes! What's the point in having a DVD/VHS combo?
And I just found out I've basically ruined/wasted 15 DVDs that I had already dubbed (and finalized) because they won't play on my Toshiba DVD player (or my son's brand new computer)!
This isn't my first DVD/VCR combo; a couple of years ago I bought a Sylvania (by Funai), which worked perfectly, dubbed perfectly, etc., before dying after 9 months. At least it worked better and lasted longer than this JVC junk. I wish I had waited a month before buying, when the recent negative reviews could have warned me from making such a disasterous choice.
Other problems/annoyances with the machine include: 1. slow power up (especially if you leave a DVD in the machine); 2. large channel info display when changing channels; 3. on the VCR side, fast-forwarding through commercials results in overshooting where you want to start playing your show again; 4. when you're recording on the VCR side, the VHS tapes loses about 2-3 seconds of what you just recorded when you "pause" for commercials;
I got the DVD/VHS combo because I like to timer-tape my TV shows (no cable or satellite) and I still have lots of VHS movies I like to watch but don't want buy them in DVD format (I spent enough money).
SIGH! Does anyone build quality products anymore?
Don't their tech service know about CPRM compatibility? October 28, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Since we bought this unit about 10 weeks ago, we have not been able to use this unit except for just a few days at the beginning. We tried to record some program and it shut off right in the middle of the show. We asked technical support for help, but they couldn't figure out. We brought it to a local JVC service contractor to look at. They held it for 5 weeks, and when the unit came back, the same problem was still there. So, we were told to send it to JVC service center in Illinois. JVC service centerer now says it shuts down when there is a copy right protected commercial is on, so we need to get CPRM compatible DVD-RW disk and record it in VR mode.
Couldn't anyone at JVC technical support have known about this? I think all their tech support should know something like this. Has JVC trained those tech service people? Or are they just incapable?
