Great features for little $$$ November 30, 2008 Bought this reciever for my mom, so ease of use and feature set are key. Main reason I bought this over the TX-SR506 is the upscaling of analogue inputs for output over HDMI (obviously). Scaling performance was decent; I've seen scalers perform better, but I've also seen much worse. I was dissapointed that the unit did not properly deinterlace 480i material though. Granted this isn't really an issue from a DVD as most everyone has a 480p DVD player and if they don't, a very good upscaling player is only $90. Other than that, super handy that only 1 cable is required from unit to TV for all input sources, IMHO well worth the extra cash if even if it doesn't deinterlace your standard def. TV source properly. Not to mention that it's Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio ready, that's a big bonus. On Screen Display is nice too. Can't comment on sound quality as I haven't spent much time with it, but Onkyo is going to be a decent sounding reciever no question. Only reason I rated it 4 stars out of 5 is the deinterlacing issue. Killer bang for the buck.
Great Reciever!! November 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased the 606 a few days ago and am glad to say that I am pretty impressed with this reciever. I bought the 606 to replace my old Pioneer VSX-816 which had no HDMI thus I could not get the DTS MA/ Tru-HD lossless audio. This was never a big deal to me being as though I am no audiophile, but when I needed to upgrade the Pioneer (ran out of inputs), I wanted to make sure I got a few more bells and whistles.
All I can say is - WOW! My system has never sounded better. Even my crappy HTIB speakers filled the room with crisp, clear sound. Setup was quick and easy and I hardly had to look at the manual. The first thing I did was use the audessy mic to calibrate my speakers and then popped in Batman Begins (Tru HD). The difference is remarkable. The scene where Batman rides the tumbler over the rooftops, you can actually hear pieces of the roof falling around you. I've been rewatching all of my HDDVDs since.
All of my devices fed to my 606 are sent to my TV via one HDMI cable.
My devices include:
TV- Hitachi 57f59 Gaming console- xbox 360 (component) Gaming console/Blu-ray player- PS3 (HDMI) Cable-FIOS STB/DVR (HDMI) HDDVD player- Toshiba D2-(HDMI)
I have not heard any buzzing or popping like others have mentioned. It also does not seem to run as hot as I thought it would, my Pioneer ran much hotter.
The bad:
xbox 360 takes about 5 sec. longer to come on screen after pressing the power button on the console. This may be common when using the HDMI (previously running straight to TV via component) and when you power down any of your devices with the input on the 606 still connected, you get a bright blue screen. Why didn't the just make it black?
All in all, this was a great buy and I highly recommend the Okyo 606!!

Onkyo Receiver SR606 November 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Excellent receiver and good buy too. No more tons of wires to the TV. Easy access to all my components.
Onkyo TX-SR606 November 24, 2008 This is a great receiver for anyone who is trying to upgrade to the latest sound formats on a budget. Originally I wanted to buy a Marantz 5003 or a Denon 2308CI but once you view the prices on these items you will see why i opted for the Onkyo. Overall, this is a great sounding receiver with ample power to drive any upper mid-level speaker set up. My only complaint with this item is the fact that the video upscaling is not the greatest. With that being said you have to also understand that video upscaling is something that really doesn't exisit. When you take a 480p signal and upscale it to 1080i your result is not a true 1080 signal, it is nothing more than a very streched 480p singal that tricks your tv into displaying 1080i. I would not let poor video upscaling keep me from buying this item because it's the thing i care the least about considering i can go buy a blu-ray player and have a pass through 1080p signal. All in All, excellent sound and a good amount of features that will satisfy most people's needs. I got it for 286 dollars direct from AMAZON, need i say more?
