God Bless America January 14, 2003 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
September 11, 2001, is a day we will all remember where we were and what we were doing. This CD did help us heal from those attacks. We did get through it and we will continue having a great and free country, state, and society.
Buy if for the Twin Towers Fund, buy it for Celine June 9, 2002 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this CD just for Celine Dion's amazing voice and for that I give it five stars. Celine really hits home with "God Bless America". This is an awesome CD that will appeal to almost anyone because of the great variety. Songs that really stand out to me are Mariah Carey's "Hero", Gloria Estefan's "Coming Out of the Dark", Simon & Garfunkle's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", John Mellancamp's "Peaceful World", Billy Gillman's "There's A Hero", and, of course, Celine's "God Bless America". Even after over 1/2 a year, this is still a terrific CD.
A Lovely disc - but consider some others May 13, 2002 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
God Bless America is a wonderful collection that will stir patriotic feelings through songs that are part of America's popular culture. However, if you're looking for the ultimate traditional recording of our "national songs," I would go with one of the outstanding patriotic choral recordings. My personal favorite is the highly acclaimed "Spirit of Freedom: Patriotic Songs and Service Hymns" by the Washington Men's Camerata, on the Gothic label.
One of the best Patriotic albums I have listened to! February 22, 2002 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful album with beautiful heart-stirring patriotic songs, I like all the songs including God Bless America by Celine Dion and Coming out of the Dark by Gloria Estefan and though I normally don't listen to Mariah Carey I did like the song Hero, really if you have an open mind about music you can't go wrong with any of the songs on this album!
some great songs, some silly nonsense February 11, 2002 14 out of 27 found this review helpful
First off, the relese of this collection was a month after the WTC horror. people were attepmting to figure out what the hell was going on. Record companies, movie and televsion companies put together many compilations of movies, songs, etc, guarenteed to stir the blood[and ring the cash register].Columbia records has an almost unfair advantage in their vaults:most of the history of American music passed through their studios. Its hard not to love an album, any album[well, outside of Duets} that could include such a group as Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra,Mahalia Jackson,Pete seeger and Tramaine Hawkins.Bruce springsteen and John Mellencamp add thier cuts, and are two of the better ones on the album{Land of Hopeful Dreams and Peacful Country, respectively.} The choice of Celine Duion to open is bizzare,as is the inclusion of Mariah Carey and Gloria estafan{unless its for some musical p.c.purpose} Hell, they could have included Bessie Smith and Billie Holliday {Strrange Fruit would have been an interesting selection]from thevaults with much greater success...this album{it was given to me as a gift],with the"substantial portions of the proceeds will go to..." 5 months later has a bad taste to it. This music can give great succor and a feeling of community, but it could also lead easily to jingosim{Look at the Winter Olympiad currentl;y under way. Bought with huge bribes, and this is hardly mentioned.}None of us who live in this town will ever forget that day,nor the terror in waiting for my kids to call in and say they were Ok.I simply do not think that the stirring of patriotism without nuance is helpful, presently. Many of these songs were wirtten as PROTESTS of American institutions, not flag waving hysteria{I remeber being at a springsteen concert in NJ when He was singing Born in the USa,and people were taking it as a flag waving moment, rather then the despair of a man who couldnt make ends meet} Oscar Wilde once said patriotism is the refuge of the viscious. That is what this collection reminded me of. Sad ,,horrible day, little helped by self serving music...
