Musiz Freak III December 14, 2007 This is the one that started it all and i ourchased an awsome copy from here for the wifey collection Top Notch!!!!!!!!!
One Of the Real Classics : Put It On, Let it Do Its Thing November 16, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First of all, this album contains "You Don't Know my Name", "If I was Your Woman", "Karma", and "If I Ain't Got You". I can't think of anything except Janet's 1993 album that has so many classic tracks one after the other. One of my favorites remains the album opener (I love how Alicia always has a quiet piano intro that breaks into a big song).
However, moving past the obviously amazing singles, there is much here to drool over. 'Samsonite Man' in particular - there is something very unique about that track. When most people think of this CD, they almost always remember "If I was Your Woman" first, but I would say that I personally think of "Dragon Days" first - its a slow burner, but when it hooks you in, it really never lets go.
Alicia Keys made a better album on "Unplugged" (she has never sounded better before or after that album), but as a studio album, this will always be my favorite Keys album. There is something special about it, you can just put it on ANY time of day, let it play and do its' thing, and it will never disappoint you. Her debut album is certainly not 'timeless', but this one definitely is.
If you are at all into collecting classic R&B records, then this has to be in your collection already. If you're new to the scene, there are very few albums on Amazon with so much repeat value. Get this today!
Some justifiably good songs, but the fire's starting to die down October 6, 2007 I was a little disappointed with this. Her voice is still wonderful and she still uses the piano to great effect on some songs, but she also started letting too many other people have control of the music, and because of that, this album turns out to be more of a mess than her debut. I'll still give it four stars because "If I Ain't Got You" is a definite masterpiece, but Alicia needs to take more control over what goes into her albums, and what ever producer or other person led her into the sinful land of sampling needs to lead her right back out. She has too much talent to be ruining her music like that.
fair September 29, 2007 Classic, eastern, exotic, modern melanges of rythm and melody. A couple of very good songs.
I love Alicia. Really, I do! 4.25 stars August 31, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
And I think this is probably the album to choose. I have listened to this CD over and over in the past. More than 25 times! =P
Anyway, this is what I think of it, track by track.
Intro - 7.5 Nice, but I think the intro, Piano & I on Songs In A Minor was better. Karma - 7 Never cared too strongly for this track, and it's not the best way to start this off. However, it's OK. The worst track on the album. Heartburn - 7.75 Has somewhat of an old-school R&B feel to it. If I Was Your Woman/Walk On By - 8.5 Quite enjoyable actually. I don't know how much of it is Alicia's doing though since it's partially a remake. You Don't Know My Name - 9.5 One of the best tracks on the CD! Leave it to Kanye to work his production magic. Loads of bass, but it fits. Love you, Kanye Omari! If I Ain't Got You - 9 Decent video, but love the song. Great choice of a single. This was my ish for a while! Diary - 10 It was very nice to hear this tune at night on 93.7 WBLK. Anyway, it's perfect. No flaws whatsoever. The second best track on the CD! Dragon Days - 7.5 I can relate pretty much even though I'm a guy! =D Anyway, it's decent, but she offers better elsewhere. Also, there isn't enough piano. Wake Up - 8.25 Nice lyrics, some meaning behind it. Pretty good overall. So Simple - 8 Not as strong as Wake Up, but relate-able. When You Really Love Someone - 8 She writes about relationships, and the needs that many people seek. Love her. Feeling U, Feeling Me (Interlude) - 8 This is my mom's jam. She wishes so much for it to be a song. It makes for a great interlude. Slow Down - 11 I feel this song immensely. Great message, especially for the ladies! I think it's her best song, period. Samsonite Man - 8.5 Great piano. But what do you expect from Alicia? Pretty good lyrics. One of the better songs here. Nobody Not Really - 9.5 A super-great song. Jazzy feel. Relate-able. Nice ending. Gives you a bit of insight; into her life, maybe even into your own. Super enjoyable.
Overall, it is a very good experience. Alicia brings you into her thoughts, her dreams, her life. Longing is what I hear in her spirit. You gotta check this one out if you've skipped over it.
