5 out of 5 stars Reel, Reel Good.   September 27, 2007

Neat concept for a CD and no better performer to pick than Van The Man. Stellar live version of "Into The Mystic." You'll love the bouncy horns of "Real, Real Gone." Your lady will sanction the acquisition after she hears "Have I Told You Lately?" and "Someone Like You." Liner notes tell which films contain which songs.
Heard for first time live version of "Comfortably Numb" done by Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and Van in Berlin just after the fall of the wall. The cut was used in Martin Scorsese's movie "The Departed" (had Martin used a Morrison song in an earlier movie he probably would have won the Best Director Oscar sooner - ha!). Van sings David Gilmour's parts in "Comfortably Numb." Surprise -- it's excellent. Only thing missing is recording of movie producers/directors explaining why they chose a Van song and what Van's music means to them. Maybe we'll get that in a DVD some day.

1 out of 5 stars Not the best of Van   September 25, 2007

I was very disappointed with this cd -- the sound quality is poor and song renditions are not as rich as they are on other recordings. I have had the privilege of seeing Van Morrison live many times and I can barely listen to this cd! If you have been living on another planet and never heard Van Morrison before: don't buy this CD! It doesn't give a good representation of the truly incredible vocal abilities of Van Morrison.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST best-of   August 23, 2007

It is serendipitous that the tracks movie producers chose from Van's massive catalog also happen to be touchstones in his long soulful career.

For my money, this is the best of the best-ofs, based on the inclusion of such wonderful songs as "wonderful remark," often neglected in other collections such as Best of Vol. 1.

As a musician, Van Morrison has been a Renaissance Man embracing blues, jazz, rock and his many esoteric muses, i.e. the "gypsy soul" he sings about in "Into the Mystic."

This CD is recommended for both the Van fan who has forgotten about these songs for years along with the neophyte who learns that Greil Marcus and Martin Scorsese and other legends worshipped at the alter of this Irish Rover and want to know what all the fuss is about. Van was the man, and for some this disc will be a homecoming. For others it will be a welcoming "into the mystic."

The inclusion of the Pink Floyd number with Van on chorus featured in "The Deaparted" is a nice bonus to a more-than-standout collection.

A+

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite   July 23, 2007

I am a huge Van Morrison fan, and really like most the songs on this CD, but they are not my favorite version of the songs. A lot of the songs are live, and I expected the studio versions.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD...Van's The Man   July 19, 2007

This is a great CD if you like Van Morrison...Kind of like a greatest hits album really from the various stages of Van's Career....Did not realize how many different movie soundtracks Van has appeared on..My only issue was that the studio version of Into The Mystic is not on here..they used the live version which does not have the same impact on you...still a recommended CD
