2 out of 5 stars Stuck with Getting Unstuck   May 19, 2008

This cd set from Pema Chodron was a disappointment. It was my first time listening to her, and perhaps my expectations were too high. I will also say that I had just completed listening to a cd lecture series from Richard Rohr titled True Self, False Self, which I considered excellent. Getting Unstuck has honest and useful advice about how to meditate, and how difficult it is to stay focused in this endeavor. Pema Chodron's candor is, for the most part, appreciated and appropriate in this context, although I did not find audience participation to be effective. In fact, I got the rather depressing sense that Pema was in a room filled with paticipants who were, one way or another, victims of abuse, victims of addiction, etc. Strengths of the series was its applied orientation - its emphasis on practice and commitment and the little things that help. Weaknesses include the rather unfortunate (and I'm sure inadvertent) "self help" tone of the proceedings, and the fact that the microphone picked-up Pema's every swallow, every aspiration, every oral/nasal sound combination - distracting!

This is the first introduction I had to Pema Chodron's work. She presents a much needed teaching with this seminar recording. Regardless of your personal spiritual beliefs, I believe this will help anyone who wants to stop habitual pattens in their life. Pema is charming, soft-spoken, humorous and non-judgemental. I like her style and I plan on picking up more of her work.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Recording   January 20, 2008

This is an advisory not a review of contents. There is a distinct clicking-popping sound on the CDs that I received. For me it is disconcerting and makes it difficult to listen to these recordings. I had the very same problems with Pema's recordings "Don't Bite The Hook." I've tried the CDs in various players and hear the same strange sounds. It is noticeable when Pema speaks.
I assume something is wrong with her microphone attachment but not being an expert can't say for sure. I'm puzzled why these same odd sounds are produced on recordings from two different companies. I wonder why Sounds True and Shambhala Audio release these defective CDs.
If you don't mind "snap, crackle and pop" sounds on your audios I suppose you might give these a try.

One of the best cd's on the topic out there. Would give it 6 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great practical advice for anyone....   June 24, 2007

This CD is a great resource for anyone who wants to break their habitual patterns of awareness and experience things at a deeper level. It is meant to be a guide that helps you to deal with automatic thinking and habitual ways of seeing the world. In short, it invites you to become more aware of your compensatory ego personality with all its predictability and surrender to a more present, spontaneous and alive way of connecting with your world. This is a book about being present in the moment and using the "stuff" of daily life as material for spiritual, emotional and psychological transformation.

Pema Chodron is an excellent speaker, has a great sense of humor and a very practical approach that could be applied by ANYONE of ANY faith. This is top notch material and well worth the cost. It stands up well to repeated listening and is simple, but powerful. For other suggestions, see my listmania lists on my profile.
