DULL! March 4, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
HBO special was several months after this "trial" snoozer. Many mistakes and Barbra was noticeably rusty as this 'rehearsal' for the HBO thing loomed. HBO special was significantly polished and more perfected although without the delightful Mike Myers' Linda Richman appearance that makes this worth the star I give .
She's still here... January 19, 2008 Her first concert in seven years, Barbra Streisand delighted fans and the public alike when she finally decided to perform live again, and this time with a tour. It was certainly an exciting event for all that attended, and just as memorable as those who's only opportunity is to see it through this DVD.
Barbra starts off the concert stepping out on stage to huge applause, and then takes on a journey of her life of sorts, letting us know when she started to want to be an actress, how she discovered theatre, etc. Through it all, she also inserts appropriate songs, like "I'll Know," a cute duet with Marlon Brando, "He Touched Me," and her signature song, "People." While her voice is not as good as it is on the album, she still does a good job. The second act is more loosely put together, beginning with a moving rendition of "The Way We Were," followed by other performances, such as a sweet "Not While I'm Around," and a beautiful "For All We Know." In the end, she leaves us wanting more, which all concerts should do.
There are a few additions here that are truly worth the purchase alone. The funniest, of course, is the skit with Linda Richman from SNL, who is invited onstage for a hilarious exchange. Then there is the medley with "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Speak Low," and a slower version of "Guilty." That is a lovely performance to say the least. There is also a Disney medley, which, while an inspiring idea, is just not very inspiring in execution. This is possibly the only bad addition to the concert.
This concert cannot recieve more than 4 stars though. One of the reasons is that there is no Yentl medley, which was one of the highlights on the album, nor a closing rendition of "Somewhere," a classic song in its own right. But still, when its Barbra Streisand we're talking about, there's very little she does wrong, and this concert, even if you already have the 90s VHS, is worthwhile to all fans.
The Concert July 29, 2007 It was fantastic...good music is always fantastic...Barbra was in very good voice and appeared to be having fun...which made all the difference for us....We watch it over and over again.....FANTASTIC!!!
More of a Broadway musical than a concert.... June 11, 2007 I was looking for her beautiful songs but the first half of the concert was like a Broadway musical and in the second half was more songs to listen to. It even had a boring Mike Myer comedy act in the middle from SNL which had no place in this concert.
BARBRA, CAN YOU HEAR ME??? May 8, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have to start out by saying that I am not the traditional STREISAND Fan. Yes, I love her voice, and who doesn't think she's a Legend Unmatched? Still, the only movies I have seen of her's are YENTIL and THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES and the only recording I own is the New York version of this same tour. Yeah, I know... SO SUE ME!
That being said, I remember watching the HBO Special in 1994 because I wanted to know why the hell someone would pay $300 for a concert ticket (not as exorbitent today as back then). The answer for me was THE YENTIL MEDLEY. When I heard her duet version of PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME, I thought "Now THAT is a BAD [...]". It was with great anticipation then that I bought this DVD. BIG LET DOWN!
I have to agree that while she is in great voice, it just doesn't have the power and sheen of the HBO Special and certainly not that of the CD recording. WHOSE BRAINY IDEA WAS IT TO ADD MIKE MYERS as LINDA RICHMAN (a lengthy diatribe which while cute, is HARDLY worth the interruption to the show and definitely not worthy to replace what for me WAS the darn show)? Plus she came back and kicked [...] again with her encore of SOMEWHERE, which can be found NOWHERE on this DVD.
I am sure BARBRA approved this version, so I have to question WHY she or anyone, for that matter, would make suck a faux-pas. You're truly letting your fans (staunch and novice) way down with this one.
