A New Sonic a New Story
On a quest for world domination Sonic nemesis Dr. Eggman has managed to steal the chaos emeralds once again and this time drained them of their power. As a result not only has the Earth split into distinct sections, so has Sonic. Now he is two beings. During the day he is the usual speed-addicted hedgehog players will remember, but at night he becomes Sonic the Werehog. In either form it is the player's ultimate goal to find the missing chaos emeralds and return them to their proper place in order to set the world and Sonic himself, back the way he should be.

Gameplay: The Two Sides of Sonic
Like nearly all Sonic games, Sonic Unleashed is platform-based. The game combines the feel of 2D side-scrolling that fans of the Sonic series love, with sharp 3D graphics, and throws in an over the back third-person perspective reminiscent of FPS gameplay for good measure. And just as in earlier games, as players race through and explore the expansive world before them, using auto lock to hone in on enemies and areas of interest, they will rely on the power they gain from the rings they collect for a variety of things, but with the new twist of Sonic's split personality, things are a little bit different.

Playing during the day, as you race across the world in the form of Sonic, speed is the main goal. Collecting rings fills you with 'Ring Energy,' which not only provides extra life, but also the advantage of 'Sonic Boost.' With this players can travel at speeds that approximate 300 MPH. In addition, Sonic Unleashed introduces two new features: the 'Speed Drift' and the 'Quick Step'. Speed Drifting is similar to drifting in racing games, allowing players to slide around corners at high speeds, while Quick Stepping is a sidestepping maneuver allowing Sonic to avoid enemies with quick steps to either side. Both keep you moving as fast as possible, so you can get as many rings as possible, which again keeps you moving as fast as possible.

As night falls and Sonic assumes his Werehog form the rings provide a different kind of power more suited to his more menacing appearance. Much slower, but also much more powerful, the Werehog relies on the rings to provide life as well as strength to shield himself from the attacks of enemies. This is necessary because Werehog gameplay, although based in platforming, incorporates significant levels of combat as well. Red orbs gathered as enemies are defeated allow the player to unlock additional combo moves that will supplement the hack and slash and arm stretching abilities that the Werehog always possesses. Whether Hedgehog or Werehog, no matter which form players prefer they will get ample opportunity to explore the two sides of Sonic since each area in the game contains both night and day segments where each form must be played.

Key Game Features:

  • Sonic’s World Transformed - Sonic maintains his high-speed abilities during the day, but at night he is transformed into a mysterious dark form with incredible never-before-seen abilities including 3D-action brawling and amazing agility.
  • Tight Navigation and Speed Control - Players accelerate to super speed with ?Sonic Boost’ by collecting rings to increase Sonic’s ?Ring Energy.’ Using ?Quick Step,’ players will quickly move left or right to avoid obstacles instantly. Additionally, ?Speed Drift’ allows players to rocket through turns without slowing down.
  • Powerful New Engine and Cinematic Graphics - With its new proprietary “Hedgehog Engine,” Sonic Unleashed enhances the classic 2D perspective with mind-blowing 3D stages. Other next-gen technology capabilities include global illumination, grid computing, continuous data streaming and an intricate path finding system.
  • Enhanced and Expanded Environments - Many unique and fascinating continents offer the player an opportunity to save the world in a dynamic, high-speed experience. In addition to exploring exciting unlockable areas, players dash through up to nine locations resembling real-life destinations including the Great Wall of China, Arctic Pole glaciers and many more.
Whether it's the updated graphics that retain the side-scrolling feel of classic games in the Sonic franchise, an expansive world to race through and explore or the multiple and new ways to play, Sonic Unleashed offers something for players of any age or level of ability.

4 out of 5 stars The one sonic fans have been waiting for.   December 2, 2008
The sonic series needs a game were all you do is play the day time sonic levels (witch for the day time levels alone the game is worth buying). Sega needs credibility again after completely laying eggs in the recent past with the sonic series. Sega wants to try and ad a new game play element noun as the werehog night levels. I personally enjoy the change of pace game play and challenge. The night time levels play surprisingly well. The game play is allot like teenage mutant ninja turtles the original on x-box. The game has so far an excellent story and gorgeous graphics. The day time sonic levels is were this game shins and like I stated earlier in my review the game is worth buying for the day time levels alone. The day time levels move very fast and fluent and are the best I've ever seen in a 3D sonic game. If your a sonic fan you won't be disappointed. If you are a casual gamer and or are a skeptical sonic fan rent first.

4 out of 5 stars Sonic Lives   December 1, 2008
This is the newest Sonic game from Sega and in my opinion is the best Sonic game since the hedgehog's Dreamcast days (Sonic Adventure 1 and 2). The daylight levels are great, tons of fun to play, the graphics throughout the game are gorgeous, and the game maintains it's classic cartoon-ish feel including some fun humor throughout. This game has received some unfair reviews from critics, they say the werehog stages are dull, and slow. While they are slow, I do not find them boring at all. They are very combat oriented, similar to hack and slash style games. This is a new concept for Sonic the Hedgehog, and I think it's nice to do something a little different from time to time. Is this the best Sonic game of all? No, but if you have always enjoyed Sonic games, then this one will be no exception.

2 out of 5 stars A lot is fixed, but what's new is broken.   November 30, 2008
I fired this game up for the first time, and was excited to see some rather good CG. My initial reaction was "Wow, Sega actually took this game really seriously." The first couple levels as Sonic backed up this prediction, as the gameplay was the smoothest I'd seen it in any 3D Sonic game; It played like Sonic Adventure 2, but faster. However, I got to the first Werehog level, and all my hopes for this game were mocked. The Werehog levels are slow, and you trudge through them while being swarmed by enemies that are generally no struggle to take out. Then, you get to a boss who's next to unbeatable; I'm 22 and have been a gamer most of my life, but I had to play the first boss no less than 10 times.

I just can't imagine what Sega was thinking on this one; If the game was made up only of the regular Sonic levels, I would have given it at least 4 stars; quite possibly 5. However, the werehog levels destroy what was an otherwise very solid, respectable game. If Sega gets the hint, and re-releases this game with the Werehog levels removed, I'll buy it. I couldn't picture myself getting tired of the traditional running levels, because their execution in this game is the best it's ever been.

5 out of 5 stars Sega is heading in the right direction   November 25, 2008

The game is worth every penny.

Graphically it is mind blowing. The gameplay is awesome for the Sonic levels and surprisingly good for the werehog. The replay value is enormous and the quality of the game overall is through the roof : great soundtrack and CG etc ...

If you love Sonic or not, this is the game you must buy.

3 out of 5 stars Sonic Unleashed, A Step in the Right Direction   November 24, 2008

Alright, let's get this out of the way right off the bat- the most recent batch of Sonic games have not been very good... and that's being generous. So I approached Sonic Unleashed with cautious optimism and low expectations. Lower then that... we are talking about being marginally impressed that the disk didn't catch fire in my disk drive. So, that was the frame of mind I was in when I started the game for the first time. I have to say, (with that in mind) that I was rather impressed.
The bad first: this is not the return to the kings of gamming status that the blue blur previously enjoyed, it's more of a baby step in the right direction. This makes Unleashed, by the standards of the rest of market, an average game- but by the standards of recent history it is a good Sonic game. Also on the bad side is the bane of almost all 3D platformers- the camera is not your friend and doesn't always agree with you as to what you should be looking. And this may just be me, (and it probably is) but Sonic's controls are somewhat loose and this can lead to missing some tricky jumps.
On to the good news. The story kicks off with an epic throwdown between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik (look kids, I'm old and I refuse to call him "Eggman" it sounds like a bad breakfast sandwich), but when Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to transform in to Super Sonic, Robotnik reveals that the whole thing is a trap and uses the power of the Emeralds to split the world and releases some dark beast trapped inside. As a side effect, Sonic is transformed in to a werehog, a powerful brawler compared to his usual speedster form. Sonic then falls back to earth and lands on a small flying creature that loses its memory. Calling his new friend "Chip", Sonic sets off to try and recover Chip's memory and set things right. But the werehog form stays with him- during they day Sonic his himself, and at night he turns into the werehog. Daytime Sonic has finally regained the sense of speed that has been lacking in the latest entries- even flashing into old school 2D sections. Sonic can even (finally) live up to his name and gain Mach speed, creating a shockwave in front of him- allowing him to defeat enemies without breaking his rhythm to attack. Add to the package quick side-steps and the ability to drift around corners make this probably the best Sonic experience in recent memory. Nighttime brings out the werehog, who's stages play out like a traditional 3D platformer ah-la Prince of Persia or God of War. Ledge climbing, pole swinging, box pushing, and lever pulling are all accounted for. Combo based combat and quick-time event kills round out the package- nothing terribly original, but all of it fairly well executed.
So how does Sonic Unleashed stack up? If you're just an occasional platformer player, or a casual fan of Sonic- this is an average game. While everything is done fairly well, there's nothing too terribly exciting to be found here. But for long time Sonic fans, or for hardcore platformer fans- Unleashed is definitely worth a look. It may be average, but it's much better then Sonic has been lately.
