4 out of 5 stars Great, but repetitive   December 1, 2008
The controls are seemless. You go from swinging among buildings to planting yourself smack on a wall. Visually, everything looks great. Although I personally always thought that the black suit spiderman should be a little bigger than good ol' red and blue. The boss fights are great. Particularly against the Vulture. I got tired of chasing Electro and the fight against the Blackcat was a little disorenting but those were still good.

Now the bad. Spiderman's voice is a little annoying. I see little difference between chosing a good path or the "evil" path. Your "help" is really useless, accept against the Kingpin's Mechs, as you can't call them to help you fight a boss. And as the Amazon review noted, beating up/saving 10, 25, 50 and then 100 of something does get repeditive.

Lastly, I haven't finished the game, but I would hope that Carnage would make an apperance in here somewhere. Can't really have an over run of sym's without him I would think

4 out of 5 stars decent game   November 28, 2008
This is a decent game to kill 2 or 3 days with. The fighting gets a quite repeative though. Worth checking out if you find it at a decent price.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best Spider-Man Games Around   November 20, 2008
If "Spider-Man 3: The Game" left a bitter taste in your mouth and "Ultimate Spider-Man" wasn't quite your thing, you may find the new "Spider-Man: Web of Shadows" to be more to your liking. Though it didn't get reviewed especially well in the gaming press, it's a surprisingly fun Spider-Man game and easily among the best super hero games to have come out this year. It also sports an original and somewhat dark plot that sets it apart from your average Spidey game.

Gameplay-wise, "Web of Shadows" borrows from the sandbox style of some of the Spider-Man movie tie-in games. Basically you're set loose in an enormous Marvel Comics version of New York and allowed to run free. As you swing through the city you'll encounter crimes in progress and can come to the aid of the police as they battle various gangs and other bad guys. From time to time a "point of interest" will pop up on your map in the form of a bright yellow dot. Going to this location will trigger some event that advances the game's main plot, often a boss fight or an encounter with another super hero. Unfortunately, there's not always an enormous amount of variety in the missions - they usually boil down to fighting bad guy X or bad guy Y. That's kind of a step backwards from the high water mark of Spider-Man games, "Spider-Man 2", in which you also got the chance to save civilians falling from rooftops, retrieve balloons for little kids, etc. Sure, those activities may seem mundane, but they did provide a break from the monotony of doing nothing but fight enemies. (While you save civilians in this game too, it's always the result of things that happen while you're fighting the bad guys.)

Speaking of the combat, "Web of Shadows" has a fairly robust combat system that's made even better by the fact that Spider-Man can switch back and forth between two different movelists on the fly. You have the option of playing as Spider-Man in his traditional red and blue outfit or his black symbiote costume and each one has a -completely- different set of moves. (You can change costumes instantly with a mere button press.) Basically "classic" Spidey is more agile and uses webbing to subdue his enemies, whereas symbiote Spidey is more of a powerhouse and uses tendrils made from the symbiotic costume to flay his opponents. The main new combat mechanic is the web-strike - Hitting the Y button causes Spider-Man to attach himself to a foe with a strand of webbing and leap towards them. A properly timed button press will result in one of several highly damaging attacks, but poor timing will put Spidey in a world of hurt when the enemy counters. Also of note is a special attack gauge that slowly fills up as you fight. You can use this gauge to launch damaging special moves from Spider-Man or to call an ally, such as Wolverine, to assist you during the fight.

The very playable combat system is aided by the ability to lock the camera on a particular enemy so you don't get turned around during the melee. In addition to simply relieving the headaches that an unresponsive camera can cause, this makes it possible to have visually impressive (and fun) aerial battles against high-flying enemies without having to manually adjust the camera. The only problem with this system is that sometimes you need to lock onto a civilian in order to save them during a battle (For instance, if a bad guy blows up a car and sends the driver flying, you're supposed to catch the occupant before he hits the ground.) and I had trouble getting the camera lock onto non-combatants. Ordinarily that would be a pretty minor annoyance, but you're penalized with "alignment" changes for failing to save civilians.

You see, Spider-Man also has an alignment gauge that shifts back and forth between good and bad. Your primary method of moving your alignment to the good side of the spectrum (Representing Spidey's normal, friendly self) is by helping injured civilians. Letting people get hurt, be carried off by monsters, etc. will change shift your alignment towards the bad side (Representing the living, symbiotic black costume's negative influence on Spidey.) At various points in the game you're also challenged to make plot-altering decisions, such as having mercy on a defeated villain or beating the living tar out of him. Being good or bad determines which allies are available to summon and also determines which of the games four alternate endings you eventually get. It's possible to "play against character" and go through the entire game using Spider-Man as an aggressive, thoughtless anti-hero if you so desire.

Graphically the game is pretty slick, sporting both nicely animated character models and a long draw distance that makes for some sweeping views of a fictionalized New York City. Spider-Man himself is extremely well-done, especially his various swinging animations. For example, he rarely clips through buildings when swinging near them - instead he'll briefly run along the wall until he's clear of the structure. Venom, the game's main villain, is also nicely done - His "skin", actually made of an alien symbiote, is always very subtly in motion. Little details like that don't make a game, of course, but they certainly add a layer of polish.

Alas, there are also a few troubling problems with "Web of Shadows". Firstly, towards the end of the game there's often so much going on at once that sometimes the framerate will nosedive. Even worse, I've had the game completely lock up once or twice. Luckily, you can alleviate much of the slowdown problem by clearing the HDD cache on your 360.(Some quick Google-Fu will explain all about that.) Also, every once in a while enemies will randomly appear or simply blink out of existence, which is kind of annoying but not game-breaking. I've also heard people say that sometimes missions won't "trigger" correctly (You know: "Go destroy object A" but object A doesn't appear anywhere), but I've never had that happen myself.

Overall "Web of Shadows" is certainly worth a look for Spider-Man fans or people looking for a break from the usual first-person shooter fare that dominates the Xbox 360's software library. It's also a welcome breath of fresh air after the uninspired lame-fests that where "The Incredible Hulk" and "Ironman" games. A fair warning to parents though - "Web of Shadows" is fairly intense for a Spider-Man game and has a "Teen" rating for a reason.

5 out of 5 stars From A Lifelong Marvel Fan   November 12, 2008

Ive read every amazing spider-man comic book, saw all the movies and played all the marvel games. As far as Spider-man games go, this one is the best. The gameplay is truly fluid and addictive. As far as the storyline goes, it is original. Some of the dialogue with Luke Cage and Moon Knight is corny, and the voiceover for spiderman himself could have been a little better. However the conversations with Wolverine, Black Cat, Wilson Fisk and Venom are actually very good in their consistency with the comic books. It truly is an awesome addition to my gaming library. So until Spider-Man goes gay, make mine marvel!

4 out of 5 stars Good game, but needs tweaking......   November 11, 2008
This is a great game, graphics are awesome, however I have some complaints on gameplay..... Very repetitive in terms of fighting. Same bunch of bad guys, same combos, not much you can do with getting them tangled in webs, it just gets them tied for a bit, you can't hang them from lamposts or completely cover them in webs that they're rolling on the ground. There are some instances where obstacles are in your way especially when you web zip a bad guy, you actually go right thru the object. Maybe a hardware issue. I managed to finish the game after beating the multi-headed Venom, and that's it.. It's not like Spiderman 2 or 3 where you can go back and just beat up bad guys....

I gave this 4 stars because of the above. I did like the idea of fighting on the side of buildings and in the air. I wish there were more of a variety to web use.
