Amazon.com Product Description
Tomb Raider: Underworld for Nintendo DS by Eidos resumes where Tomb Raider: Legend left off. This installment introduces a new, interactive playing environment that gives players a chance to immerse themselves more fully into the game. Players once again take the role of Lara Croft as she explores such wide-ranging places as the Arctic, Mexico, and beneath the Mediterranean Sea.

Tomb Raider: Underworld for the Nintendo DS inserts 3D action into a 2D perspective.

Puzzle-filled levels can be solved through insight and exploration.

This version utilizes the Nintendo DS's touchscreen and microphone.
On The Go Fun
Eidos has taken the storyline from the console versions of the game and made it into a fun experience you can take anywhere on the Nintendo DS. The game features a 3D game engine, so everything looks great, but inserts the action into a 2D side-scrolling perspective to accommodate the DS's 2D controls.

Explore Epic Worlds
At the core of the game are puzzle-filled levels that can be solved through insight and exploration that rewards players who interact with the environments as much as possible. Underworld gives players more flexibility to navigate locations and scenes, so you'll have more fun exploring exotic and disparate locales, such as Thailand, the Arctic Sea, and the Jungles of Mexico, as you strive to complete your challenges.

Players play as the famed heroine Lara Croft and utilize her acrobatic abilities, as well as her grapple and many weapons to make it through puzzles, clobber enemies, and more.

Unique Design Takes Advantage of Touchscreen and Microphone
The DS version of Tomb Raider: Underworld takes advantage of the DS's unique touchscreen and microphone to solve environmental puzzles, unlock chests, access inventory, and change weapons. There are over 50 unique challenges and puzzles that use the touchscreen in the game. And for increased complexity and improved gameplay, the puzzles are context-sensitive and the challenges are action-based.

Eidos has broken levels down into small sections in order to facilitate shorter game sessions that better accommodate portable playing on the train, plane, and wherever else you might be. Each section has its own Treasure Chest puzzle, which can either be solved right away or saved for later.

Beautiful, Fluid Graphics
With Underworld, Eidos pushes the graphic capabilities of the DS by delivering a three-dimensional art style that is as good as anything seen on the DS. Animators spent a lot of time creating the animation sequences by hand to achieve the desired level of detail. The graphics are styled after the Xbox 360 version, but simplified so as to achieve realism and fluidity on the DS platform.

Lighting effects are used liberally to give the game a realistic look. When looking up close, you can see the fine details in textures such as stonework.

With updated graphics and fun, side-scrolling gameplay, Tomb Raider: Underworld lets both veterans and newcomers take Lara Croft on the road with them for some quick fun.

4 out of 5 stars at last (well, kinda)   November 20, 2008

I am a Tomb Raider fan since the beginning. I have a PS2 and was really wanting that version of the game, which has been inexplicably delayed until possibly the end of January. But I saw that there was a DS version and since I own a DS I figured I'd give it a shot, since I don't want to buy a next gen console at this point, and I have no patience LOL.

This game is very nice on DS. The graphics are amazing and I havem't had any bugs. Of course it is 2D but it looks so real that I keep forgetting that! I keep trying to run in the background and whatnot. In that respect I am very pleased that it is such a hig quality game.

The game itself is not very hard and I have heard rumors that it is quite short like Legend and Anniversary were. I do not know if it is more simplified for DS, but it is quite easy for the most part. There are some simple tetris like puzzles and some artifacts. The game has a limit on health and guns and I never seemed to have a problem with what I had in stock. Once I got used to the controls (because I usually am not the one playing the DS) it was no problem getting around.

Overall I am quite happy with the game and even though I know the PS2 will be better because of the 3D nature, I am not unsatisfied with the DS version, in fact, it exceeded my expectations! The game is simple but if you like Tomb Raider I think you will enjoy this little romp with Lara Croft.
