4 out of 5 stars Far more playable than first Credited   November 18, 2008
Before reviewing this product, I have to say that I was attracted to it and that I cannot say I would have been easily displeased. I wanted to like this videogame right away and hoped beyond hope that this game would be good. Ever since the domination of Tony Hawk on the X-game franchising, many games have tried to be like that. There is a player with some impossible tricks, a layout that somehow skirts the line between fun and being a stereotype, and there is usually something vocal spouting really bad catch-phrases. This game promised to be different, however, even giving me a name that sounded refreshing. Hope is a beautiful, fragile thing.

When I got the game, I played it quite a bit, and found that I really thought it was fun. The backgrounds were beautiful, highlighted by a system that is designed to give you a great experience, and that made the ride great. Sometimes that made me mess up as well, with my rider having some terrible little falls because I was watching the world around him and not the rider himself. This is made all-the-more impressive by the way the rider looks: when you watch the rider pull off a stunt you cannot help but think "that is great!" There's a sexy appeal to the way two hands barely grasp the handlebars of an ATV, and there is something about pulling off tricks I wouldn't dare dream up in the really real world. I also liked the competition: sometimes you play for position and sometimes you play for style, making the world a complexity and yet instantly thrilling. Different people can find different thrills in the game, too, and that makes for something good. I personally like having something people can play when dropping by and this works out well for that. Combine that with the fact that moves get increasingly interesting and you have a game that is refreshing because of the things that have come before it.

If you like games of this type, you will like this one right away. It has a lot to off, breaks loose from so many of the ugly little pitfalls games have gotten into, and it does all this with a sort of zest I enjoy. It honestly made me feel like I used to feel when I played a beautiful little biking game on my NES back in the day: it made me want to keep on playing. Even people who have gotten to the point where they dislike these types of games may find a gem disguised. I think I was beginning to become one of those people, beginning to think that games could never be retooled again.
Happily, I was wrong.

3 out of 5 stars Great graphics, but sometimes frustrating gameplay   November 16, 2008
This game definitely wins in the graphics department, but if you're looking for SSX type gameplay (except with an ATV) you're going to be disappointed. Before you can even begin to deal in the real races, you have to be able to pass 5 "simple" tests. The first four are no problem, but then you have to run a lap in under 30 seconds, and the only way to do so is to pull off tricks. Rather than a simple "X" or "O" button mashing system, you have to use the stick to pop your ATV into a trick at the right time and then push a button in air to execute a trick. It takes a while to get used to this, but it can be done.

There are a lot of fun things about this game. You can customize you ATV from the ground up in color and such, but you have to win races to get money to do so.

A casual gamer will probably not find this game very fun, but if you are willing to invest the time and get into it, you'll enjoy this experience. As I said before, the graphics are amazing, and you really can feel like you're riding the off-road trails.

3 out of 5 stars BIG, BIG AIR but the landing is rough   November 16, 2008
I have spent many hours unlocking PURES vehicle parts and tracks. There is a great single game player experience to be had here. The trick system and driving engine harken back to older snowboarding titles, and MICROSOFTS excellent moto cross and Monster Truck series. There is alot of joy to be found in short bursts of play here, taking 1 or 2 races at a time, then tinkering with your ride. The controls are dead on easy to learn and a little too easy to master eventually. The sound effects are a bit less polished than the rest of the game with voiceovers that are either too "gnarly" or just plain corny. Also the big airs you can launch your ATVs into in this game are best experienced with your own soundtrack, as this game actually features again WOLFMOTHERS WOMAN, but offers a few other decent tracks and beats MOTORSTORM PACIFIC RIMS soundtrack by a mile. The lack of a 2 person local multiplayer REALLY hurts this title for me as I cannot take it online and would like to challenge someone locally. FUN, FUN, FUN just expect a very forgiving landing and crash system that allows, even throws your vehicle back into the proper positioning time and again making the overall experience a little soft. A more varied vehicle selection and little less hand holding in the driving system would have stretched this one out to what I expected of it. A great trick system with MASSIVE air, and a highly customizable vehicle experience make up for the faults however and for ARCADE-ATV-SSX fans this one will qualify as a must rent or bargain purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gem!   November 14, 2008
The first time I tried the demo of this fun ATV racer, I knew Disney had a winner. This is a family friendly racing game that anyone can pick up and play, and enjoy.

When you first start the game, you are subject to a trial run to make sure you know how to handle your ATV in competition. This short tutorial teaches you all that you need to know about the game and how to complete tricks, before you jump in and start racing.

The heart of the game is in the World Tour mode. There is also a Single Race mode, Time Trial, and Online play (there is no local multiplayer mode). In World Tour, riders begin their career at Stage 1 and must compete in a variety of race styles (race, sprint, freestyle) to unlock points. When you have enough points, you advance to (unlock) Stage 2, and so on, until you eventually progress through the game's 10 stages. The good news here is that you do not have to win (or place in the top 3) in order to earn these points. Even placing 10th will net you a couple points towards your goal. Of course, the better you place, the more points you earn, but races are repeatable until you acquire the right number to unlock the next stage.

Right from Stage 1, you have a variety of tracks, so you are not racing repeatedly around the same terrain. These tracks are gorgeous to look at, and a heck of a lot of fun to careen around at top speed. As others have noted, the tricks are amazing, the air is huge, and the scenery is simply breathtaking--if you have time to admire it. More likely, you will be looking to land your trick, or ahead to the next jump.

Your ATV is the 'main character' in the game, allowing you to build and customize it any way you like. Winning races and unlocking stages will award you with special performance parts and items to equip, and even if you are not mechanically minded, it's a lot of fun tweaking your ATV the way you want it, be that simply a new paint job and some decals. However, you will quickly learn the value of adding performance parts to help with your next race. At the beginning of the game, you only have two ATV garage spots, but as you progress, more become available, so you will soon have an entire garage of ATVs at your disposal. Some races require a certain engine qualification etc to enter, so having several ATVs of different specs is a plus.

You choose a rider for your ATV, and can change riders at any time between races. Riders don't increase your skills as such, but each one has a unique Special Trick to add to your repertoire, so trying them all is fun. Additional riders can also be unlocked. One of the neat little touches I like is that your rider starts a race with clean clothes, but ends it splattered from head to toe with mud.

Overall, this is a very accessible racer for everyone who enjoys, or has even a passing interest in, the racing genre. Good clean (or in this case, muddy!) fun.

4 out of 5 stars Great GAME, intense, fun, (long load times).   November 14, 2008
I've been playing this game since I got it a couple weeks ago and it's an utter blast to play.

ATVs:
Gear them up as you like/need
you actually build them from the frame up.
You can build for race/fast, slower but more tricks, or a happy mix of the 2. All depends on your style.

Tracks:
There are short tracks, long tracks and crazy stunt tracks.

Not only do you need to come in first place but you also need to Get the highest score possible for the tricks. Tricks get you boost which keeps you ahead of the other racers. The more boost you have in reserve the bigger the tricks you can do.

The only down fall of this game is the load times going from each part of the game. It's great while you are racing but you could easily take a coffee break while it's loading sometimes.

STILL WORTH GETTING.
